PPC advertising includes the use of keywords to target potential customers in searches. It also includes other methods such as Google AdWords, Bing Ads, Twitter ads, Facebook ads, LinkedIn Ads, YouTube Ads and others. The most common form of PPC advertising is Google AdWords.

Marketers purchase a bid on a keyword by specifying how much they are willing to pay per click if someone clicks on an ad using that keyword. For example, if I am interested in bidding on the keyword New York for PPC advertising, I might specify my maximum bid at $5 per click. If I have no competition from other marketers bidding on this same keyword, then my advertisement will appear when people search for New York and this amount will be deducted from my account each time someone clicks on one of my ads with that keyword.

However, if there are many competitors bidding on the same keyword and the advertiser has not set a high enough maximum bid, their ads may never show up in the results because their bids would have been surpassed by those who set higher max bids.
